OVERSEAS IMMERSION TRIPS*
Service, knowledge, culture and a sense of transformation will all be a part of your experience in an Overseas Immersion Trip. During an Immersion Trip you will experience the culture from the view of the poorest of the poor in the areas of health, housing, and basic needs. You will work alongside HHM in service, but you will also be given the opportunity to participate in cultural events, listen to dynamic speakers and take time to visit local sites of interest.
Belize
Groups usually participate in the Building for Change program and help with the construction of a new home for a qualified recipient. The Building for Change program will build its 100th home this year.
Immersion trip volunteers also spend time working at our new Outreach Center for children infected with and affected by the HIV/AIDS virus. This facility, the only one of its type in the country, provides critical outreach services to childrena and their families.
Trip participants also visit partner schools to see the Hand in Hand Ministries lunch feeding program in action, see the results of scholarship and tutoring efforts and meet past recipients of HHM programs.
Nicaragua
Projects in the past year have included the construction of 2 homes, extensive renovations to a community pre-school in a poor area of the city of Managua, home repairs with partner families in our Pathway to Change Program, building closets at San Cristobal Boys Home for adolescent boys.
Groups also tour Pan y Amor, a school that Hand in Hand Ministries helps support, located in the market district of Managua and learn about their program and the children they serve. Groups also help with various maintenance and classroom projects at the school.
We also plan each trip to include activities with the children we work with, such as taking them swimming or to the zoo, or helping out with classroom activities.
In January 2008 we hosted our first Medical/Dental Group and held our second Annual Pre-school Teacher Workshop for 24 pre-school teachers working with poor children in the barrios of Managua.
Projects usually include various cleaning, painting, and construction at two of the program sites. Speaking Spanish is a plus but not necessary.
And other local programs that serve the poor.
